Oliver Rackham, the famous botanist, calculated that the main timbers of the original part of his College in Corpus Christi at Cambridge University would have taken 1249 oak trees measuring seven inches in girth. He calculated how frequently such a building could have been created from the renewable oaks of an ordinary Cambridgeshire wood.
