Rattan is a climbing plant found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It can climb to 150 metres or more and is an excellent material for making furniture, is lightweight and flexible. Once harvested the outer layer is peeled off and used for weaving, leaving the inner cane which is used for making furniture. Different diameters of cane are used throughout the construction; the frame of the furniture will use larger sections while the surfaces will use smaller diameters.
Rattan furniture can be varnished or painted and will give years of service and since it is lightweight it is easy to move outside into the garden on summer days.
Although rattan furniture has been used for several centuries, it’s growth in popularity came with the expansion of the British Empire. It’s difficult to imagine a Malaysian planter on a veranda without the accompanying rattan furniture and no doubt when they returned to England they bought their furniture with them for their conservatories back home.
Rattan furniture is not just about seating. There are dining and coffee table designs, footstools, baskets and magazine racks. In fact everything you need to make your conservatory comfortable.
