If you live, or aspire to live, in a Georgian home you may be aware of the work of the The Georgian Group, a national charity for the protection and preservation of Georgian buildings, monuments and landscapes.
Founded 70 years ago, they have lobbied for heritage interests and protection for historic buildings and fought for the introduction of conservation areas in the 1960s, giving much needed protection to superb Georgian terraces in London, Liverpool, Bath, Exeter and Newcastle. More recently they successfully argued for the removal of VAT on historic buildings repairs.
Today, The Georgian Group is a statutory amenity society in England and Wales and that’s where we get involved with them from time-to-time when clients consider installing a Georgian conservatory.
By law they must be consulted on planning applications affecting listed Georgian buildings as well as monuments, parks and gardens. They comment on proposals and help owners, architects and planning authorities find appropriate solutions for rebuilding, maintenance and extensions.
One of their bete noires are PVC windows and doors. They are campaigning for the banning of them in conservation areas and on listed buildings since they wreck the appearance of the properties and are also damaging environmentally, releasing toxins into the atmosphere at all stages of production and disposal. Like them we believe that Wood windows better than PVC. You can find out more about Georgian Glass and windows on our website.
Incidentally, if you are looking for a Georgian property you should check The Georgian Group’s associate website Georgian Property.
