160 years ago on 11th June 1850 Joseph Paxton, gardener to the 6th Duke of Devonshire, took the train to London. There at a meeting of the Board of the Midland Railway, he sketched out on a piece of blotting paper his plan for the Crystal Palace

Today is the anniversary of Sir Joseph Paxton who was born on 3rd August 1803 in Milton Bryan Bedfordshire. The seventh son of a farmer and small landowner, Paxton was the creator of the Great Conservatory at Chatsworth House and the Crystal Palace built for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
