“The Daily Telegraph” reports in a interview with Ed Balls, the Labour Shadow Chancellor, his anticipation of measures in Wednesday’s Budget of measures to help the construction industry and his own recommendation that VAT is reduced from 20% to 5% on repairs, maintenance and additions to private housing – just for a temporary period.
Mr Balls says, “this would help people who aren’t moving house but want to improve their property”.
The Daily Telegraph calls this a “conservatory allowance”, under which home improvers could presumably build swimming pools and patios at advantageous rates. Well, even though we would welcome this, we’re not holding our breath! However, if you order a conservatory between now and Wednesday and the VAT rate does by some miracle fall…we’ll make sure you won’t be out of pocket.
