The Richmond Oak Conservatory Process – How we work

Many people often ask what the process is to get an oak extension built at their property or where they should begin? It may seem overwhelming at first, but that is why we have a simple 3 step process that outlines how we undertake all of our projects.

  • The design consultation
  • The design proposal reveal
  • The design installation

Design Consultation

Starting with the first step, this is where one of our design consultants will come round to visit you at your home.

In this stage, we will get to know you and see what you are looking to achieve with your property. We feel it is important to establish trust and confidence here so that you feel comfortable asking any questions and don’t feel held back when we suggest recommendations as well.

There are four key areas that are important to discuss in this stage:

  • Purpose and functionality
  • Aesthetics
  • Technical considerations
  • Realistic investment required
Why do we go into detail in these areas?

For purpose and functionality, it is important to know how you are wanting to use this new space as it can have a bearing on how it is designed. For example, an open plan oak framed kitchen extension is going to be completely different to a closed-off oak framed orangery.

Once a layout has been discussed, it’s then required to discuss the aesthetics and how your space will look, from the framing style to the door options and how the window layout will look. Not to mention how it is finished off on the inside - will the floor be oak, will it be slate, brick, carpet etc.

Next is technical considerations. This is where we need to identify any building obstacles, such as land that needs to be removed, or drainage systems that need relocating for example. Building regulations and planning applications will all be handled on our end so you won't have to worry about where to start there either.

The last step is establishing a realistic investment. If you have a budget in mind it would be ideal to know at this stage so we can factor that into how we design the extension, from the size to materials used.

What goes into buying an oak orangery or conservatory?

We are often asked the questions, ‘How do you design an oak conservatory or orangery?’ or ‘What is the process for installing a conservatory?’

Design Proposal Reveal

This stage is where we will present to you design concepts, along with a comprehensive quote. If there are any changes that need to be made, they can be discussed at this point.

Our professional design team will put in extensive work to make sure all concepts are to the highest standard so that you can see how your new home living space will look once it is built.

Once everything is confirmed and you are happy with the designs, then the preparation for the installation can begin. In the meantime, you can start planning the decor and choosing your new furniture!

The Design Installation

The manufacturing of all the frames usually takes 4-6 weeks in the joinery for manufacture, which also depends upon the joineries schedule of work in progress, during which time, the builder will normally carry out the necessary associated base work ready for the conservatory or orangery

Once all the frames are ready to be delivered the installation can begin. It will normally take 2-4 weeks for the frames to be fully constructed, glazed and weathered.

The last steps will take around 1-2 weeks once the structure is built. This consists of the 2nd fix associated with building works required to finish off the electrics, plumbing, heating and flooring.

After this point, you are ready to enjoy your brand new living space!
